first install and PostgreSQL won't connect

Postby MichaelB33 » Tue Feb 02, 2010 6:15 pm

I just purchased and downloaded PT3 on my MacBook Pro running OS X (10.5.8)
The download and install seemed to go fine but when I double click the PT icon a window pops up titled "Configure PostgreSQL Server" with four fields:
Server= localhost
Port=5432
Database user= postgres
password= dbpass

When I click on connect and error message pops up saying "Unable to connect to this database. Please check the configuration."

I checked the online help manual but that doesn't seem to help.

thanks,
MichaelB

This likely means you had a previous version of PostgreSQL intsalled.

1) In the installation directory, there will be a uninstall-postgresql.app file will be there, executing (double clicking) that will uninstall the postgresql installation.
The uninstaller is: /Library/PostgreSQL/8.4/uninstall-postgresql

2) Restart your computer and drag the PostgreSQL 8.4 folder from /Applications to the trash.

3) Open a terminal (Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal) and run the following commands, when prompted put in your normal Mac password (just type and hit enter, it won't show you *s).

sudo rm -rf /etc/postgres-reg.ini /Library/StartupItems/postgresql-8.4 /Library/PostgreSQL/8.4
sudo dscl . delete /users/postgres

4) Reinstall using our installer

Thanks kraada...
Sorry I'm not sure where the installation directory is... I searched finder and nothing came up?

I believe you can find that in the PostgreSQL folder in /Applications/

Hi kraada,

Sorry still having trouble... the PostgreSQL 8.4 folder in Applications contains the following 8 icons:
Application Stack Builder
Documentation
pgAdmin III
ReloadConfiguration
Restart Server
SQL Shell (psql)
Start Server
Stop Server

All of these are executables except for "Documentation" which has 6 subfiles none of which are related to uninsall.

thanks

The uninstaller is:

/Library/PostgreSQL/8.4/uninstall-postgresql

If you can't find it make sure you start with the Library directory in your system volume.

I've just been told by someone who was having trouble with this process after getting a partial postgres install that it didn't work until they removed the empty PostgreSQL folder from the library, emptied Trash and rebooted prior to running the PT3 installer again.
