Tutorial: Troubleshooting Performance Issues

Postby APerfect10 » Sat Feb 16, 2008 1:42 pm

One of the most common problems that we hear is related to PokerAce Hud's performance which is typically determined by:
  • Stats are to slow to update or do not update
  • Stats are missing for a few players even though you have enough hands on them to meet the "Minimum Hands" filter
  • General lag/slowness either with your poker client or PokerAce Hud
Below are the main reasons for these performance slow downs. I suggest going through the entire list of items to troubleshoot the issue:
  1. Archive Old Hand Histories (Recommended)

    1. It is imperative that you move your processed hand histories to an archived directory (other than a subdirectory of the location you have configured in PokerAce Hud).
    2. First, create an archived directory then move all of your old hand histories into this directory
    3. Second, in your PokerTracker auto-import window you must check "Move processed files to the following folder when I close this window:" then click "Browse..." and select your new archived directory.
Note: This must be done on almost every site. The only exceptions are those sites such as OnGame where they use a database to save hand histories and do not actually write individual files for each table session. You can determine if you need to archive your hand histories for a certain site by checking to see if the "Move processed files..." option is available in the PokerTracker auto-import window for the specific site.
  2. Enable Your Database Cache in PokerAce Hud (Recommended)

    1. Enable your database cache by going Option->Preferences->Database then selecting "Use Database Cache" and "Automatically Update Cache".
    2. Restart PokerAce Hud and your cache will be initially created (see note below)
    3. After your cache is created, stats should load nearly instantaneously and performance should be greatly increased
Important!: Do not do this while playing! I recommend creating your cache overnight or when you will be away from your computer for a period of time. The initial cache creation can take some time depending on the amount of databases, the size of your databases and the speed of your computer.
  3. Maintain Your Database(s) (Recommended)

    1. Access Database: You should frequently compact your database. You can do this in PokerTracker via Utilities->One Step Compact - Poker and Hand History Databases.
    2. PostgreSQL Database: You need to vacuum/analyze your database on a regular basis. You can do this in PokerTracker via Utilities->PostgreSQL Database Functions. Choose your database then select "Vacuum/Analyze" and click "Compress".
  4. Limit the Databases Selected in PokerAce Hud (Optional)

    1. Each database you have selected in PokerAce Hud needs to be connected to and queried for each player at every table. I highly recommend that you use no more than three databases at any one time.
    2. If you have multiple Access databases, think about converting them into one Postgres database
    3. Postgres databases can hold a lot of hands with little performance loss. There should not be a need to have more than two or three Postgres databases at once
If you have gone through this tutorial and are still having performance issues, please contact us and we will gladly work with you to correct the issue. A log file always helps.

Enable logging, open your poker client, play 20-30 hands on a single table then send me the PAHud.log file via the PokerAce Support system. In your support message, please note that you have completed this tutorial.
