The error means PostgreSQL isn't running. Try restarting the computer. If it still does this, go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services.

Find PostgreSQL in the list. Right-click and select Start. Does this work or give an error?

Postgres isn't listed in Services.

Then I went to start/programs/postgresSQL 8.3/start database...but I get the same error

Are you using Vista?? There is no way that PostgreSQL 8.3 shouldn't be in the list of services. When you installed 8.3, did you use their one-step installer option?

Not sure...The only thing I remember doing is unchecking the system box which allows the program to load automatically. I think I'll uninstall and try again.

I use XP, not Vista

Make sure you use this link, the one to the pgInstaller, not the one-click installer...

Still doesn't work and it's still not showing in Services.

Try installing 8.2

Are you running under a user account that isn't the admin on that PC?

I am the administrator for my PC.

I uninstalled everything and tried 8.2. No Luck. Still no connection and doesn't show in services. As I was exploring I went into the pgAdmin and noticed that pretty much everything is grayed out and under object browser it reads Servers (0).

I've never seen this before. Are you sure you are actually installing the program? Does it come up and prompt you for port #'s, user names and passwords, etc?

This time when I installed it I left the "run as a service" box checked and I did get prompted for passwords and I think I'm good. I did manage to convert my database. Now I'm going to install PT3. I assume PT3 will be able to import my database even though it's an earlier version. After I import my DB should I update postgre to the latest version?
