Networking PT problem... :-(

Postby keggler » Thu Jun 05, 2008 12:11 pm

Hi,

I've got 2 PC's now running with PT3 full installs with Postgres on both.

Followed the network FAQ meticulously; when I try to "browse" to the server DB from the client I get a "cannot connect" message; "are you sure the server is accepting TCP/IP connections on port 5432?"...

I've disabled the server and client firewalls completely and set an exception in the router to open 5432...

Below are the Postgres config. files as I've changed them on the server solely, an IPCONFIG on the server and the router's firewall settings...so effectively I'm trying to connect from the client to IP 192.168.0.2.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Susan

# (The "=" is optional.) Whitespace may be used. Comments are introduced with
# "#" anywhere on a line. The complete list of parameter names and allowed

# The commented-out settings shown in this file represent the default values.
# Re-commenting a setting is NOT sufficient to revert it to the default value;
# you need to reload the server.

# Any parameter can also be given as a command-line option to the server, e.g.,

# PostgreSQL Client Authentication Configuration File
# ===================================================
#
# Refer to the "Client Authentication" section in the
# PostgreSQL documentation for a complete description
# of this file. A short synopsis follows.
#
# This file controls: which hosts are allowed to connect, how clients
# are authenticated, which PostgreSQL user names they can use, which
# databases they can access. Records take one of these forms:
#
# local DATABASE USER METHOD [OPTION]
# host DATABASE USER CIDR-ADDRESS METHOD [OPTION]
# hostssl DATABASE USER CIDR-ADDRESS METHOD [OPTION]
# hostnossl DATABASE USER CIDR-ADDRESS METHOD [OPTION]
#
# (The uppercase items must be replaced by actual values.)
#
# The first field is the connection type: "local" is a Unix-domain socket,
# "host" is either a plain or SSL-encrypted TCP/IP socket, "hostssl" is an
# SSL-encrypted TCP/IP socket, and "hostnossl" is a plain TCP/IP socket.
#
# DATABASE can be "all", "sameuser", "samerole", a database name, or
# a comma-separated list thereof.
#
# USER can be "all", a user name, a group name prefixed with "+", or
# a comma-separated list thereof. In both the DATABASE and USER fields
# you can also write a file name prefixed with "@" to include names from
# a separate file.
#
# CIDR-ADDRESS specifies the set of hosts the record matches.
# It is made up of an IP address and a CIDR mask that is an integer
# (between 0 and 32 (IPv4) or 128 (IPv6) inclusive) that specifies
# the number of significant bits in the mask. Alternatively, you can write
# an IP address and netmask in separate columns to specify the set of hosts.
#
# METHOD can be "trust", "reject", "md5", "crypt", "password", "gss", "sspi",
# "krb5", "ident", "pam" or "ldap". Note that "password" sends passwords
# in clear text; "md5" is preferred since it sends encrypted passwords.
#
# OPTION is the ident map or the name of the PAM service, depending on METHOD.
#
# Database and user names containing spaces, commas, quotes and other special
# characters must be quoted. Quoting one of the keywords "all", "sameuser" or
# "samerole" makes the name lose its special character, and just match a
# database or username with that name.
#
# This file is read on server startup and when the postmaster receives
# a SIGHUP signal. If you edit the file on a running system, you have
# to SIGHUP the postmaster for the changes to take effect. You can use
# "pg_ctl reload" to do that.

# Put your actual configuration here
# ----------------------------------
#
# If you want to allow non-local connections, you need to add more
# "host" records. In that case you will also need to make PostgreSQL listen
# on a non-local interface via the listen_addresses configuration parameter,
# or via the -i or -h command line switches.
#

One more thing - the Postgres service on the server isn't started; although PT3 loads up - when I try and start it manually, it says "it started, then stopped again..." - postgres service is running on the client...

lol - thought it might have something to do with the postgres service not running on the server...

took PT3 and postgres out completely - reinstalled; now back to that darn insufficient permissions thing at the end of the install - even now with XP Pro...

starting to get really hacked off with this database... grhhhhhhhh....

Start --> Run , type 'cmd' hit enter. Type "net user postgres /delete" and hit enter. Then reinstall.

Do you have a backup of your hand histories? If you do, you could also try deleting the C:\Program Files\PostgreSQL directory before attempting to reinstall. This will permanently destroy any old database you had in that directory so you should be advised not to do this unless you have HHs backed up.

You might also want to try turning off some anti-virus software when attempting to install. I saw something the other day where people who have F-Secure were getting odd errors; for a 2 minute installation procedure you should be quite safe (and if you're really paranoid, unplug your internet connection and you'll be 100% safe).

Deep joy!!

think I've sussed it...

googled & goofed around some more - found a thread somewhere about permissions and
using procmon to diagnose...

used procmon from sysinternals to get the clue... filtered on the postgres PID around the time
of the permissions failure...

log kept saying something to do with a program called spampal & a transparent proxy service layer provider it had...

it was a spam filter program i have had for yonks - spampal - with a transparent proxy service layer provider

uninstall postgres, delete all postgres folders (including the one(s) in Documents and Settings)

net user postgres /delete

uninstall spampal & the proxy

reinstall pokertracker with postgres - - voila!!

and to boot; it solved me netorking problem once the service decided it could start - wahooo - fingers crossed...

thanks for everyone's input - gonna try and play poker now lol

I'm really glad you got it sorted, and thanks very much for letting us know how. :D

I'm going to link to this in the Postgres FAQ in case it helps anyone else.
