standard deviation BB/100 ? can someone explain this

Postby The Dead Donkey » Sat Feb 20, 2010 11:01 am

Can someone explain what standard deviation BB/100 means? Does it have to do with Expected BB/100? I'm running -700 big blinds under All-in EV for 5k hands. Do these two stats correlate in anyway? If not can you explain how to interpret std dev BB/100.

Standard deviation is a statistical tool. For more details on exactly how it works, I'd recommend starting on their wikipedia page.

I know what standard deviation means. But if it's saying i have std dev BB/100 at 10.54 .... my BB/100 rate is 10.54 standard deviations from what mean/ or norm? the normal poker population BB/100, or does it infer my normal BB/100 by analyzing my play/all-in situations?

If the standard deviation is 10.54 ptbb/100, that means the deviation of your results by session vary that much. The norm is going to be your winrate. So if you were at par completely breaking even, it would mean that 66% of your sessions ended between -10.54ptbb/100 and +10.54ptbb/100.

So it's a measure of variance between sessions. so the high this number the more "high variance" you playing style/or that game is?
Thanks in advance

Yes variance is the square of the standard deviation so it is a measure of the variance you can expect to experience in your sessions. I am curious why yours is so low. What kind of style do you play? If I remember correctly, with a standard TAG game the SD stat is usually at least ~40BB/100 (and higher for those who play a higher variance style). Mine was in the high 40s when I started but seems to have settled down at 39BB/100

it's only for 5k hands and 4 sessions in Rush poker, that might have to do with it.

That sounds likely - expect it to grow the more you play (up to a point of course).

This is precisely what it measures. In poker there is often some correlation between higher variance and higher win rate. In general you can increase your win rate by playing more marginal hands, but it will also increase your swings and you'll have to be prepared for that. I think this is why you see so many different BRM suggestions. Really the only accurate and personalized BRM would be made from your BB/100 and SD/100.
